Message from Board Chairman, Lt. General John B. Sylvester, on recent events in Afghanistan.

“When America Goes to War…Our Families Go to War”

August 18, 2021

Dear Wounded Warriors Family Supporters
and our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marine Beneficiaries and Families:

As a veteran myself of both the wars in Vietnam and throughout the Middle East I am acutely aware of the impact of current events in Afghanistan.

Our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and their families have served nobly and proudly, and have, in many cases, given their life or suffered grievous wounds on behalf of our Nation and for the people of those regions.

In the case of Afghanistan, we provided a relative degree of security and rule of law which offered a chance for a lasting peace for 20 years.  We provided the tools and training for the government to establish itself as a Nation at peace.

Regrettably, our presence for all that time was not sufficient for a way of life we would have preferred to take hold across the warring factions of that country.

That in no way diminishes the sacrifice made by our troops and their families!  Your service and sacrifices made possible many thousands of Afghans to live in peace and to prosper for all that time. You may ask “was it worth it?”.  I believe that the thousands of Afghans who enjoyed that peace for 20 years would say thank you.

You Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and your Families that we serve, our mission does not change, we are here to redouble our effort to address your needs and continue the care, training, and support we provide.  We remain steadfast in our commitment to you.

To our supporters, donors, and those who care about the lives of our wounded warriors and their families we assure you that our level of care and support continues and, indeed, will increase as we become aware of instances where the impact of the fall of Afghanistan is having a deleterious effect on our beneficiaries.  We thank you for your past support and encourage you to continue to provide that support to our warriors and their Families.

Sincerely,

John B. Sylvester
Lieutenant General, US Army, Retired
Chairman of the Board
