During Omaha Navy Week, Wounded Warriors Family Support welcomed Rear Admiral Michael Nowakowski, Deputy Commander of Naval Education and Training Command, for a tour of Dunham House — Nebraska's first residential community built exclusively for combat-wounded veterans. The admiral visited the 27,000-square-foot facility under construction in north Omaha, featuring 30 apartment-style residences, mobility-accessible units, shared community spaces, dining, and fitness facilities. WWFS leadership discussed the unique challenges facing combat-wounded veterans and how Dunham House addresses the national shortage of veteran-centered long-term housing. Master Gunnery Sgt. Martin Duarte, USMC (Ret.), WWFS Outreach Director, stated: "This is more than a place to live. It is a place where veterans can build relationships, maintain independence, and enjoy the dignity and quality of life." The visit highlighted the critical role of military-nonprofit partnerships in supporting America's most severely wounded service members.
READ FULL RELEASE →Community quilters handcrafted 30 patriotic quilts — one for every apartment at Dunham House — on display at the Wolfe Country Quilt Show and Garden Walk on July 18, 2026, in Bennington, Nebraska. The quilts, comprising the Dunham Quilt Collection, were stitched by Lynette Wieger and fellow volunteers to honor combat-wounded veterans with a symbol of community gratitude. The project began in May 2025 when Wieger reached out to Colonel John D. Folsom, Executive Director of Dunham House, offering a handmade patriotic quilt for each of the 30 private apartments. The annual show at 1795 County Road 21 featured more than 100 quilts, with all voluntary donations benefiting Dunham House directly. Each quilt is a hand-stitched tribute honoring America's combat veterans. The Dunham Quilt Collection will be delivered to residents when Dunham House opens September 11, 2026.
